BBS Access Instructions for Mac Users
Getting Your Free FirstClass Software
Click on the link for "Mac First Class Software" above to download the software archive file. After unencoding and unstuffing the archive with Stuffit Expander or equivalent as usually done for software you download from the internet, you will have a FirstClass Client folder containing the FirstClass Client application.
Your First Session
Next, make sure you are still connected to the internet. (If you are used to getting on line by invoking a web browser, this is OK but not necessary, as FirstClass does not recognize web browsers. You can get on line by invoking your PPP dialer, or by utilizing your DSL or cable modem service.)
To access the BBS once you're on line, just open the Settings folder and launch the settings file "nomug.net" by double-clicking on it. On the "Login" screen that appears, click on the "login" button with the user and password fields left blank and you will connect to the BBS (via TCP/IP) and a "registration" screen will appear. Next, you need to create your own account by filling in the registration screen.
To complete your BBS registration, you are required to enter your real name (skip middle initial), mailing address, and phone number, and choose your user ID and password. Tom Adam, who is the BBS Administrator, will validate your account for full access a day or two later, if you are a NOMUG member. Before validation or if you haven't yet joined NOMUG, you have limited access (15 min per day, can't post messages, and mail only within the BBS), which expires in 90 days. If you need to alert Tom or need assistance, his home phone is 838-0466, or you may send him email from outside the BBS to "administrator@nomug.org", or from inside the BBS to "administrator".
Easy Access from the Internet
After the registration session, you should enter your user ID and password on the Login screen to access the BBS under your own account. For ease of use, you may want to click "setup" on the Login screen and enter your user ID and password into the setup window, check the "login automatically" box, and then click on "save". This will give you one-step access to the BBS by simply double-clicking on the nomug.net settings file, or an alias to it you put conveniently on your desktop.
